Challengers 15

The last couple weeks have been like a roller-coaster, helping organise Barcelona's newest Tech event, Challengers. What's next, Taipei, Helsinki, who knows? For anybody interested, I'll keep up to date with these "business" type things on my Instagram, I never really had any use for Instagram until now.  My blogger page will remain a sanctuary for my arty scraps.

Digital Painting Sunday

You can find the work in progress and other sketches on my instagram, not sure for how long I will have the energy to post there. https://instagram.com/0nionface/

Since Twitch seems to constantly crash on me, I tried to record the session straight to drive, will have to see how it turned out. If it's good enough quality I will post an edited video with a bit of commentary.

The not-so-scary barbarian trailer!

For some reason, the link above sometimes shows the wrong video, to see the correct link simply click the post title and the correct video should show up.

Fixing the Aspire 5738 over heating problem.

I decided to try fix my old Aspire 5738 lappy, rather than just throw it away. The problem was that it was unbearably slow and though it could still play video and music, it would over heat and crash any time I tried to run skype, as well as some other simple programs. The unit was basically a big paper weight which was destined for the bin.

So I opened it up. And laid out her guts.

Painting reflective surfaces

After seeing some of the art done by Scott Robertson
I felt the need to practice painting reflective surfaces, here is the result. The photo I used was just some random image from google. I wanted something with naked surroundings, simple colours, this worked well. Maybe i can try some more complex shapes and environments next.

Overwerk and a stereoscopic skull

I would very much like to collaborate with Overwerk on some sort of art/music project. A lot of the time I am listening to his stuff while I paint. What do ya say Ed?

Below is a little test I did with diffusion. I made this mo fo 3D, read on for instructions.

DIY VR-goggles

Last weekend I had a couple days to commit to a project. I chose to make some VR goggles based on the Google cardboard design. The folded cardboard design seemed very smart and was a very cool way to show how accessible VR is becoming. All you need is some cheap lenses and a pizza box, as they say.

The build.
I wanted something more sturdy than a pizza box, something adjustable. Instead of corrugated cardboard I decided to use 5mm foam core, in sleek matte black finish of course. I also bought some 5mm rubber foam for the rim of the goggles to give it that nice snug fit, flush against the forehead and nose. Keeping out any sneaky light.
The lenses were from Amazon, sold as a part of the Dive kit, they are plastic but work fine for only 7 bucks.
Perhaps if I get more serious I can buy some glass lenses.

Lumix GH3

A few weeks ago I got myself a brand spanking new GH3, which I've wanted since the GH2 was released.
Get ready for the family vacation slide show!

Although I am now an Illustrator/concept artist/game artist, my career actually began in film. Concept art was more like a hobby at that point, I used to draw and illustrate all the story boards and art for the films I wanted to make. Those images were seen by a games company in Melbourne and they offered me my first real concept art gig. Since my films were not paying the bills I followed the path of least resistance and ended up where I am today. It's been an awesome ride with lots of unexpected life changing events.
But now I feel it is time to get back in to my first love. And so I obtained a GH3 to familiarize myself with my old friend, film.

Jail Birds

Before I left Rovio, they asked the artists in the games studio to do some Angry Birds posters to spruce up the hall ways. This was my submission. Whether or not they chose to adorn their walls with this one, I do not know.

It's what happens to the birds after the fame and glory has worn off.

Dan Dennett

This will be my last post for a while, a few months maybe. As of this weekend I am officially homeless, in a good way. A man without a country. I've packed up my things and starting on a voyage unknown. New places to explore, new people to meet and adventures to have.

Below are a couple progress shots of this portrait, I tried to use a more traditional approach.
And this was perhaps the first time I went from start to finish without checking the tone with a desaturation level. I'm going to assume this is just a fluke that I got it right, at least until I can reproduce the result without relapse.

Rincewind

About to head off on another adventure, so it's time to make a post and start drinking as per my tradition. I've only two half bottles of white wine, but they should suffice.

I'm a big Pratchett fan, I've either read or listened to every Discworld novel he's published. And have re-read some of them 2 or 3 times. Nigel Planer makes a brilliant Rincewind in the audiobook series, so good that every time I read one of the Discworld novels I hear his voice in my head.

It's a pity they didn't use him for the role in the movies, because I think he's physically perfect for the role too. Of course I'm also a big Young Ones fan.
